the very first castles were made entirely of wood!Castles were built mostly for defense, so they weren't exactly comfortable. stairs in the castle were ALWAYS CLOCKWISE. this way intruders going up were at a disadvantage(most swordsmen were right-handed) while soldiers going down would be at an advantage.the achilles heel of a castle was almost always the well. invaders could poison the water so that when the inhabitants of the castle drank the well water they had a slim chance of surviving whatever deadly poison was put in.
